This design was created in celebration of 2018, the Year of the Dog in both Japanese and Chinese culture. The dog drawing above was created using Adobe Illustrator software. It depicts an image of a Japanese traditional style hariko (papier-mâché) dog, a symbol of protection in Japan. As far back as the Heian era (between 794 -1195), dogs sculptures have symbolized guardians of the house and the family, and many small dog sculptures protect entrances to shrines. Hariko dog sculptures are given as gifts for good luck, symbols of fertility, good health and happiness within a family. The black symbol below the dog's head is the Japanese word "inu" and means "dog."
